Nationalism (1917) contains the text of lectures given by Tagore in Japan and the United States in 1916-17. In these essays, he criticises the nation-state in both East and West.

Description

In these essays, Tagore offers his vision of a society independent of it. In E.P.Thompson’s words, ‘it is a prescient, even prophetic, work.’

But Tagore’s candid indictment of nationalism provoked hostile American and Japanese reaction. Nevertheless, according to Krishna Kripalani, he ‘must be admired for courting abuse’ and like Saito Isamu, a Japanese scholar, we must express gratitude to Tagore ‘for his warning to us.’
