Two Sisters (Dui Bon) was first published in 1943 (translated by Krishna Kripalani) and is one of Tagore’s last three novels. It is about the eternal conflict that arises when a man does not find a mother figure and a lover in the same person.
The poignancy and tender irony of its theme makes Two Sisters one of Tagore’s finest novels. It explores the theme of a man’s need for a mother and desire for a lover in one person, and how he draws strength from ‘the mother’ in a woman and inspiration from ‘the beloved’ in her.
