Broken Ties (1925) was Tagore’s sixth novel, written after a gap of five years following Gora. He translated it from Chaturanga (1916), jointly with W.W. Pearson.
Broken Ties is written in a completely different style than his earlier novels. It is terse, light and dramatic.
All the stories are told by Srivilas, a young man from a village, coming into the intellectual sophistication of Calcutta. He represents the alter-ego of Satish, the central character, who he hero-worships. Damini is the love interest who marries Srivilas although she loves Satish.
