Strange Attachment and other stories

This is the first extensive translation of Bibhutibhushan Bandyopadhyay’s short stories in English. The stories are simple and often centre around the villages of Bengal. Their main concern is with the small details of life.

Dr. Phyllis Granoff, the translator, is a graduate of Radcliffe College and she received her PhD from Harvard University in Sanskrit, Indian Studies and Fine Arts. She has publihsed scholarly articles on Indian art, literature, religion and philosophy.

Bibhutibhushan Bandyopadhyay is now considered one of the greatest writers of the Indian subcontinent. When he died in 1950 at the age of 56, his reputation was well-established. Since then he has acquired a major international following based primarily upon the English translation of his novel Pather Panchali which was published in 1968.
