Chitra (1913), a lyrical drama, is the translation of Chitrangada (1892). It is based on a story from Mahabharata.  The English translation, in Edward Thompson’s words, presents ‘an interesting study of Tagore’s method and is the best example of his insight into another language…’

Description

One of the Pandava brothers, Arjun, is smitten by Chitrangada and asks for her hand in marriage. She is an only child, and her father agrees on the condition that their son be the price for allowing the marriage to take place. He wanted his grandson to be the perpetuator of his race. Arjun agrees and lives with Chitrangada in her father’s capital for three years.
