Ashoka the Great is a historical novel chronicling the life of Emperor Ashoka. It was originally published in Dutch, as a trilogy, written between 1937 and 1947 by the Dutch scholar Wytze Keuning.

Wytze Keuning worked as a school teacher and headmaster of a primary school in the Netherlands during the latter half of the twentieth century. In 1937, he decided to dedicate his further career to writing the historical biography of the ancient Indian emperor, Ashoka, which took its final form between 1941 and 1947.
J.E. Steur, the translator, worked as child psychologist between 1962 and 1995. Fascinated by Keuning’s book and her experiences in the surroundings of one of India’s great spiritual masters in the late eighties, she took upon herself the task to make Ashoka The Great available to the English speaking reader.
