Allama Iqbal: Selected Poetry

Serving as an introduction to the works, influence, and legacy of the Muslim philosopher-poet Allama Muhammad Iqbal, this collection provides faithful translations that retain the special ornaments of Persian verse.

There are in all 61 nazms and 26 ghazals, drawn mostly from Bang-e-Dara and Baal-e-Jibreet. The poems are thoughtfully chosen and faithfully rendered into English, which is lucid, rhythmical and appropriate.

This collection of the works of Iqbal, considered to be one of the greatest poets of the Urdu language, showcases the musicality of style and unique rhyme and assonance that has made his work memorable.

The poems are in Urdu with the English translation, and a transcription of the Urdu text in Roman script.

A lengthy introduction, discussing the important aspects of Iqbal’s life and art, is also included.

Kishan Chand Kanda has had a long and illustrious tenure as a Reader in English at Delhi University. He completed his Ph.D. in English from Delhi University, Master’s degrees in English from Punjab University and Nottingham University, and a Master’s degree in Urdu from Delhi University. He has published several works of Urdu poetry translations. Dr. Kanda has been honoured with the Urdu Academy Award for excellence in translation for his works.  He has published a critical study of Tennyson: The Two Worlds of Tennyson, and an anthology of English poems.
